Gus is twelve, forty-six pounds, arthritic in both hips, worse on the left. Dr. Renner read that off an X-ray in November 2024. He still takes his morning walk, just a shorter loop than the one he used to take. For a long while the only thing I noticed was how he got up off the floor. Then one evening in June 2025 he misjudged the jump onto the loveseat, came up short, and slid back down onto the carpet. He was not hurt. He was embarrassed, which in a dog looks like walking away and pretending he never wanted up there. Thirty-one years of watching high school athletes taught me to read that walk.
I am not a veterinarian. I taped ankles for thirty-one years at one East Texas high school, retired four years ago, and that is the whole of my qualification. But I know when a piece of furniture has turned into a wall. Our loveseat sits fourteen inches off the floor, and that number is what sent us to the Topmart foam ramp in June 2025, because it stands 11.8 inches high and is built for seats 11 to 15 inches up. Before that, in May 2025, we borrowed a neighbor's hard plastic pet stairs for a weekend and his feet slipped off them twice. Hard edges and a sore dog do not mix, and that weekend is why we went looking at foam instead.
Fourteen Inches of Seat, Eleven Point Eight Inches of Ramp
The Topmart foam ramp is 11.8 inches high and built for furniture 11 to 15 inches off the floor, which is exactly where our loveseat sits. It holds up to 50 pounds, with the best comfort under 35, so at 46 pounds Gus is near the top of what it will do. I will keep saying that plainly rather than pretend he is an average-size dog.
Amazon Check Today's Price on Amazon →Step 1: Measure the seat before you buy anything
Measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion, not to the frame and not to the arm. Ours is fourteen inches. The Topmart ramp is 11.8 inches high, and the listing puts it in range for furniture 11 to 15 inches off the floor, so our loveseat sits near the middle of what it was built for. If your couch is eighteen inches, this ramp will not reach and a taller one is the honest answer. I would rather lose you here than have you fighting a ramp that was never the right height.
Then measure the floor space you are willing to give up. The footprint is 21.7 inches deep by 15.7 inches wide, and the whole thing weighs 3.9 pounds, which means it moves easily and also means it can be knocked out of place. Ours sits along the end of the loveseat and takes less floor than the hard plastic stairs our neighbor lent us. I slide it an inch or two when I vacuum and put it back where it belongs.
Last, do the weight math before you order. The ramp supports pets up to 50 pounds, with the best comfort under 35. Gus is 46, so he is near the ceiling of it and I am not going to dress that up. It has carried him for a year and a half without a soft spot I can find, but if your dog is a seventy-five pound Lab, buy something rated for the job and do not let a nice product page talk you out of arithmetic. The listing itself aims at smaller breeds and senior dogs, and that is the right frame for it.
Step 2: Put it where the dog already wants to go
Gus always approached the loveseat from the end nearest the kitchen door, so that is where the ramp went. Not where it looked best in the room, not where it stayed out of Mike's way. The first week matters more than the furniture arrangement being tidy, and you can move it in a month once the habit is set.
Get the footing right underneath it. Foam that light will skate on tile or hardwood, and a ramp that shifts under a nervous dog teaches him the ramp cannot be trusted. Our den is carpeted, so we set it down and it stayed put. If your couch sits on a hard floor, put a thin rug or a rubber mat under the ramp before you ask the dog to use it. I would do that before anything else on this list, and I would not skip it.
The shape is two tiers, a low step first and then the rise to seat height. That is the reason it works for an old dog. His front feet commit to the low tier while his back feet are still on flat carpet, and the two layers of foam take the load in stages instead of one jolt at the top. He places every foot himself, which is the entire point. There is nothing to hold him and nothing to catch a toenail on the way down.
Step 3: Teach it with treats, and expect about a week
I used treats and I did not push him. Pushing a sore dog onto a ramp is how you teach him the ramp is a bad place to be, and he will remember it longer than you will. The first day I set a piece of kibble on the low tier and let him take it with his front paws still on the carpet. That was the whole session. It lasted maybe a minute.
The second and third day, the treat moved up one tier. He put one front paw on, then both. When he came off I did not make a fuss, because a big celebration can startle a dog who is already unsure of his footing. The fourth day he put a back foot on by himself, and that was the moment I knew it would take. A dog with bad hips will avoid loading them if he can, so a back foot going up voluntarily is real information.
It took about a week of that before he climbed it on his own with no treat in sight. A week is not long. It feels long when you are standing in a den at seven in the morning holding a piece of chicken. Some dogs will be quicker. A dog with worse hips than Gus may need two weeks and a hand steadying the ramp so it does not shift. Watch the back feet the whole time. If he is dragging a hind foot or knuckling over on it, stop and call your vet, because that is not a training problem and no ramp on the market will fix it.
About a week of treats and he went up on his own. What changed after that was not the climbing. It was that he stopped standing at the loveseat and staring at the cushion.
Step 4: Make it the only way up, for the whole household
The ramp only works if it is the only route. For the first month Mike would still lift him onto the loveseat when he was in a hurry, and one lift undoes a week of quiet work. We made a rule. If he wants up, he uses the ramp. If he will not use the ramp that day, he stays down and we sit on the floor with him. It sounds stern. It is not. It is the same rule I used with a kid in a walking boot who wanted to jog to the water fountain.
The Topmart ramp stays in the den. It does not go out to the porch and it does not go to the car. Ours has exactly one job, the loveseat, and I think that is why he took to it as fast as he did. Dogs learn places, and a ramp that appears in four different spots is not a place. Our three wooden porch steps out back are a separate problem with a separate answer, and a wet East Texas morning makes those steps slick no matter what you own.
If your dog jumps onto more than one piece of furniture, pick the one he uses most and start there. Do not buy a single ramp and carry it around the house every day. The first week is the part that costs you patience, and you only want to spend that once.
Step 5: Hold the weight down and check the foam now and then
Dr. Renner asked us in November 2024 to keep Gus's weight down, and I have come to think of that as the other half of the ramp. Every extra pound is load on two bad hips and load on a piece of foam. He is forty-six pounds and he stays there. If your dog is carrying two or three pounds he does not need, that is worth more than any piece of equipment in this house, and it is the one thing on this list that costs nothing.
The foam itself has been no trouble. It is 30D high density, and the listing says the material resists yellowing and oxidation, which matches what I see, because after a year and a half of daily use it still looks like the day it came out of the box. I wipe it with a damp cloth about once a month. It carries a one-year warranty and I have not had to use it.
The listing shows 4.3 stars from more than 9,500 ratings, which is a real sample and not a small one. A sample that size means some of those buyers got a ramp that did not suit their dog or their couch, so read the low reviews looking for fit problems rather than for the foam. Buy it somewhere you can return it. Then check it every few months. Press each tier with your thumb, look for a soft spot, and stop using it if you find one. That is not fussing. That is what you do with any foam that carries weight.
What Else Helps
The ramp solved one problem. It did not solve the floor. In March 2025 we replaced a flat pillow bed with a Bedsure orthopedic bed, and the change I noticed was in the morning, getting up out of it, inside of about two weeks. The cover comes off and gets washed about once a month. That is a different job from the loveseat and it needed a different answer, and I would not skip the bed while you are fixing the climbing.
In February 2026, after a rainy morning when his back legs slid out on the wet porch steps, we bought a PICK FOR LIFE sling. It hangs in its bag by the back door and comes out two or three times a week, for wet days and for getting in and out of the CR-V. Mike or I lift lightly at the back end while he walks. It is not a daily item and it is not a substitute for the ramp. The ramp is for a dry carpeted den. The sling is for slick wood and a car.
And the unglamorous part. Cosequin soft chews started in November 2024 at Dr. Renner's suggestion, and the salmon oil came in January 2025. The chew is the one I would point at first, because around six to eight weeks in he was getting up easier after his walk. What the oil did for his joints I cannot separate from the chew, and I have said that out loud more than once. None of it is a cure. I am not a veterinarian and one dog is not proof of anything. Ask yours what fits your dog and your budget, and give it a couple of months before you judge it.
The Ramp He Uses Every Evening, Not the One in the Closet
Topmart's foam ramp is 11.8 inches high for seats 11 to 15 inches off the floor, rated to 50 pounds with best comfort under 35, and light enough at 3.9 pounds to move with one hand. Ours has sat beside the same loveseat since June 2025, and it has one job. If your numbers line up, this is the version of the fix that actually gets used.
